The east coast: Saint-André, Bras-Panon and vanilla
La Réunion6 minby Sejournia
The east is the island's wet side, the one that takes the trade winds. Saint-André and Bras-Panon follow one another on the Salazie road, with three catalogue listings.
The coastal road from Saint-Denis to Saint-André runs beside the sea at the end. Past Saint-André it turns inland towards Bras-Panon and then Salazie. It is the east's only axis, and everything there hangs off it.
Saint-André
Saint-André is the largest commune in the east. Cane takes most of the lowland, and the town is the supply point before the climb to Salazie. The catalogue lists an apartment and a guesthouse room there, between 52 and 86 € a night.
Bras-Panon and vanilla
Bras-Panon lives on cane and vanilla. The commune sits at the mouth of the rivière du Mât valley, which climbs towards Salazie, and the main road crosses the fields before it forks. One catalogue apartment there sleeps four.

The east is not visited like a site. It is crossed, and you understand it while driving.
- Drive early, while the east side is still clear.
- Sleep in Saint-André or Bras-Panon the night before a Salazie day.
- Stop along the road to look at the fields, not only from the car.
- Plan for rain, even in the dry season.

We slept in Saint-André to be early in Salazie. The drive is short and you skip the climb from the west coast.

The smell of vanilla in the car after the visit is hard to forget.
