Le Tampon is the southernmost of the highland communes. It holds the middle of the island between Saint-Pierre and the volcanic massif, and the catalogue lists four places there, sleeping 4 to 16.
Le Tampon is not a village but a set of districts spread over the slopes. The town sits low, the Plaine des Cafres high. Between them, the volcano road, which starts at Bourg-Murat, serves the Piton de la Fournaise massif.
Bourg-Murat and the volcano road
Bourg-Murat sits in the commune of Le Tampon, where the road up to the Plaine des Cafres meets the one down to Saint-Pierre. The volcano road starts there and crosses the pastures before reaching the Plaine des Sables.
The point of sleeping in Le Tampon is the departure hour. From the coast, the volcano is a long drive away and you often arrive as the clouds rise. From Le Tampon you leave at dawn and come back down by noon.
The four places
Three villas and a house, from 188 to 413 € a night. All have outdoor space, a garden or terrace, and three have a pool. The largest sleeps sixteen, with a separate bungalow.

- Stock up down in the town, shops thin out as you climb

Leaving Bourg-Murat at six in the morning changes everything: you reach the volcano before the clouds.

Bring a fleece, even in summer. Nights are cool and the houses are not always heated.
